Canterbury Restoration Day Sunday Sept 28 2003 Ride the Ferry from Lyttleton, free of charge, and explore Otamahua/Quail Island for the day. Leave your planting spades at home to see and learn about the ecological restoration of Otamahua/Quail Island, the restoration of the old Barracks, a Lepers cottage, Shackeltons stables and dog kennels and much much more. Bring the kids, sensible walking shoes, food and hot drinks to supplement a sausage sizzle lunch. If you have display boards, brochures and other information about your restoration project, bring that too! The Ferry departs for Otamahua/Quail Island Island from 'B Jetty' (where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from) Lyttleton Harbour at 9.30am and 1.30pm. How to find the ferry The Quail Island Ferry departs from Lyttleton Harbour 'B' Jetty. This is also where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from. To find it, exit the road tunnel, head for Norwich Quay, follow your nose for about 300 meters, cross the 2nd over-bridge and then look for the Diamond Harbour Ferry signs to take you down onto the wharf and jetty. Limited parking space is available. Weed Ecology Workshop Landcare Research is hosting a weed ecology workshop at the Quality Hotel, Palmerston North on the the 16th of October 2003. If you are interested in: interactions between humans and weeds, likely future weed scenarios for NZ, the role of silver eyes in weed dispersal, sneaky ways gorse and broom seed can be unwittingly spread about, the wilding conifer conundrum, how weeds can change under pressure from herbicides, what willows are doing to our native fauna, the impact of old man's beard at Taihape, and the new Weedbusters initiative, then this is the day for you! As well as an opportunity to meet famous researchers you will also be able to meet and talk to other like-minded people. The workshop is free of charge and morning and afternoon tea will be provided. NZERN News 04/09/2003 Restoration Directory The Canterbury-Waitaha Restoration Directory has gone to the printer and will be posted out next week. At 50 pages, it has a new layout with illustrations from renowned botanists like Hugh Wilson and friends. The print run is 670 copies. Each directory has a form to update listings. Other regional editions will then be printed and posted out. 04/09/2003 EcoTrack DoC has approved a grant of $9,000 from the TFBIS fund to cover the costs of developing EcoTrack. A lot of development work on EcoTrack is now under way. The grant includes the cost of producing a print guide for users. Thankyou DoC! 06/09/2003 NZERN Publications A new NZERN membership brochure designed to be left in information centres and public libraries.has been produced by the Bush Telly Trust. A 3-fold format on buff paper has been used. There is space for local contact details to be stamped. The brochure been given a trial run this week and will go to the printers next week. It will then be shipped to local branches by the Bush Telly Trust. 8. CONTACT NZERNs main on-line resource is at www.bush.org.nz.
