Travis Wetland Community Planting Day An open invitation is extended for the public to participate in a planting day, with the goal of establishing 460 additional native trees and shrubs donated by Trees For Canterbury. This key event in the ongoing development of the Travis Wetlands is planned for Saturday September 20th. The Reserve, noted for its regenerating native bush and wildlife habitat, is the largest remaining areas of wetlands in Christchurch. The event is scheduled between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday at Travis Wetlands situated on Beach Road. The Ferry departs for Otamahua/Quail Island Island from 'B Jetty' (where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from) Lyttleton Harbour at 9.30am and 1.30pm. How to find the ferry The Quail Island Ferry departs from Lyttleton Harbour 'B' Jetty. This is also where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from. To find it, exit the road tunnel, head for Norwich Quay, follow your nose for about 300 meters, cross the 2nd over-bridge and then look for the Diamond Harbour Ferry signs to take you down onto the wharf and jetty. Limited parking space is available. Weed Ecology Workshop Landcare Research is hosting a weed ecology workshop at the Quality Hotel, Palmerston North on the the 16th of October 2003. If you are interested in: interactions between humans and weeds, likely future weed scenarios for NZ, the role of silver eyes in weed dispersal, sneaky ways gorse and broom seed can be unwittingly spread about, the wilding conifer conundrum, how weeds can change under pressure from herbicides, what willows are doing to our native fauna, the impact of old man's beard at Taihape, and the new Weedbusters initiative, then this is the day for you! As well as an opportunity to meet famous researchers you will also be able to meet and talk to other like-minded people. The workshop is free of charge and morning and afternoon tea will be provided. More copies are available for anyone who can find a home for them 17/09/2003 Pipi Update A big thank you to Jason Gleason (Tararu Valley Sanctuary & Conservation Trust) who flew done from Wellington to Christchurch last weekend for 3 days to work on Pipi. Jason is now the system administrator for Pipi. He is able to log onto NZERN's computers and keep them ticking over. Dave Evans from Christchurch (Native Habitats) also helped out and is now the network administrator for Pipi. 17/09/2003 Restoration Directory The Southland-Murikiku Restoration Directory will be published by the Bush Telly Trust this week and then will be mailed out. 17/09/2003 GIS New support for NZERN's maps for conservation (GIS) has been gained last week. Individual members of the ESRI User Group offered practical support at their recent National Conference in Wellington. It is hoped to have a top notch sytem up and running next year available over the internet. A big thank you to Parker Jones (MIRO) for a lot of work last week. 17/09/2003 NZERN National Conference The Wellington Branch is busy working out a list of invitations to the NZERN national training conference to be held in November. There is limited space at the various venues but there will be a place kept for 1 person from each active group with a restoration site in the wider Wellington region.
