Canterbury Restoration Day Sunday Sept 28 2003

Ride the Ferry from Lyttleton, free of charge, and explore Otamahua/Quail Island for the day. Leave your planting spades at home to see and learn about the ecological restoration of Otamahua/Quail Island, the restoration of the old Barracks, a Lepers cottage, Shackeltons stables and dog kennels and much much more. Bring the kids, sensible walking shoes, food and hot drinks to supplement a sausage sizzle lunch. If you have display boards, brochures and other information about your restoration project, bring that too!

The Ferry departs for Otamahua/Quail Island Island from 'B Jetty' (where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from) Lyttleton Harbour at 9.30am and 1.30pm. Stay for the day and return at 4.40pm or stay for lunch and return at 1.40pm.

This event is sponsored by NZERN (New Zealand Ecological Restoration Network) and the Banks Peninsula District Council.

How to find the ferry

The Quail Island Ferry departs from Lyttleton Harbour 'B' Jetty. This is also where the Diamond Harbour Ferry operates from. To find it, exit the road tunnel, head for Norwich Quay, follow your nose for about 300 meters, cross the 2nd over-bridge and then look for the Diamond Harbour Ferry signs to take you down onto the wharf and jetty. Limited parking space is available.

10.00 Assemble displays, BBQ, tables, and otherwise set up.
10.25 Welcome
10.30 Colin Burrows (Otamahua/Quail Island Trust) Planting's, weeds, methods (good and not so good), failures, lessons.
11.00 Helen Braithwaite (DoC), Mike Bowie (Lincoln Uni), Rob McCaw (ECAN) Walking talking tour of the Trust restoration planting's to look at the results of the planting's and talk about restoration objectives, challenges, etc. Difference in soils and the consequences, pest and weed control measures, etc.
12.30 Lunch at the Visitor Centre. Sausages supplied by Banks Peninsula District Council. Displays.
12.30 Mike Peters (NZERN) Demonstration of Pipi - a web based tool for restoration..
1.30 Ferry departs to Lyttelton
1.30 Mike Bowie entomologist Beetles and weta hotels on the island.
1.50 Ian Domigan (NZ Traps) Demonstration of the new generation animal welfare approved kill traps for Stoat and Ferret.
2.00 Ian Hill (DoC) More walking talking tours to different cultural icons, Pines and daffodils, stables and dog kennels and barracks and leper cottage, and ship grave-yard etc. There is enough time to walk all the way around the island before the ferry departs.

Restoration Directory
The editing of the Restoration Directories have finally been completed. They go to the printers tomorrow. 1800 copies will be posted out.

Pipi Update
The workshops for discussing the longterm development of Pipi have been completed.

Around 70 attended and many very useful suggestions were made.

A plan is now being edited and will be published in 2 weeeks.

A special thank you to Frances Sullivan (Environment Canterbury), Tony Charles (DoC Head Office), Marie Alpe (DoC Auckland Conservancy), Jan Simmons (Doc Waikato Conservancy), and Nicola McGrouther (Otago Regional Council) for hosting these workshops.

NZERN National Conference
Preparations for the NZERN national conference are well under way. It is to be held in Wellington over the weekend of 8 and 9 November.

Delegates are coming from around NZ. Training will be provided so these volunteers can gow back and strengthen community based restoration efforts in their own regions.

It is intended to begin providing hosting for the websites of member groups from November 2003.

Priority is being given to national organisations who are doing a great job and require the specialised assistance NZERN can provide - including access to databases.

Web hosting will be then made available to local groups early in the new year.

Sample contracts, data sharing agreements and cost details will be included in the "Pipi Development Plan" due to be published mid September.
