Old Blue Award Gary James from the Wellington Forest and Bird Home Nursery Group was awarded the Old Blue Award at the Forest and Bird AGM which was held in Wellington on Saturday 21st June 2003. "Gary became interested in native plants at college, and started planting at home. This interest developed into a nursery, and became a project which involved others. They began supplying the Manawa Karioi re-vegetation project in the South Wellington, then the Wellington City Council for planting on the town belt. Lately they've been supplying the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. In the mid 90's, Gary's group ran 25 home nurseries which, over time, supplied an estimated 50,000 plants. In recent years attention has shifted to threatened and uncommon plants, to increase biodiversity for the Council plantings, and a focus on genetically sourced material. To achieve this, Gary has co-ordinated a highly trained seed-gathering team, and developed good relationships with DOC and landowners. Gary is sincerely thanked for over 12 years of greening Wellington." Julia White
