2003 ECO Conference

Environment and Conservation Organisations of New Zealand

2003 ECO Conference ’Getting Results’

27-29 June 2003

Awataha Marae, North Shore, Auckland

It’s that time again! The annual ECO Conference is a great opportunity for people from New Zealand’s environment and conservation groups to gather to share ideas, discuss key environmental issues, learn valuable skills and be energized and inspired.

The theme for ECO 2003 is “Getting Results!” with an emphasis on helping you to develop practical skills and networks to make a difference.

· Gain valuable campaigning skills
· Network with others who are doing similar things to you
· Debate with leading environmental thinkers and campaigners
· Hear from groups about their successes and challenges

The programme will include a mix of dynamic speakers and interactive workshops, covering marine protection, environmental education, the workings of the media, multi-cultural environmental perspectives and having fun. The Aucklanders amongst us are proud to host the conference and there will be an Auckland flavour, including a local tour with an environmental twist.

Fully catered with delicious food (we care about our food!) at the welcoming Awataha Marae on the North Shore, within easy bus and car access of Auckland’s centre, you are welcome to stay at the marae during the conference.

Check the programme on the website at www.eco.org.nz/conference

You can register online now or contact us so we can send you your conference Registration Pack:

ECO - New Zealand’s environmental network

ECO is a non-profit network of 65 organisations with a concern for conservation and the environment, formed in 1971. Our membership includes large international groups such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, national groups including Federated Mountain Clubs of NZ, and small local groups such as Kapiti Environmental Action.

ECO plays a powerful role in providing support for smaller groups and integration and networking for environmental activists and issues across the country, with an office in Wellington. The annual conference brings together people from throughout New Zealand and the conservation and environment movements.

ECO has been centrally involved in campaigns to protect native forests, lakes and rivers, played a key role in the setting up of New Zealand’s conservation and environmental structures and legislation and continues to be at the forefront of campaigns for marine protection and environmental management.

7. NZERN News

12/05/2003
Pipi Update
A 2 year plan is now being prepared for the development of Pipi - the computer program that produces Kereru, drives the NZERN website and publishes the regional Restoration Directories.

A series of meetings, interviews and online forum are being organised across NZ to get the widest possible input from community groups, iwi, farmers, native plant nurseries and schools about their information needs.

- What information do you need to help you carry out your restoration project?
- Do you need a place to host your website?
- Do you need maps?
- How could the NZERN website and password area be improved?
- Special needs of some groups - keeping nursery information - cultural uses of plants - farm shelterbelts - teaching resources.

A second series of workshops in the 4 main centres are to be held for agencies and national organisations who want to discuss sharing data with NZERN via Pipi.

- Pipi will be capable of automatically providing data for other websites - helping to keep them up to date. This will save the owners of these websites a lot of work & cost.
- Many community groups are putting information into Pipi with the intention of having this data passed on to DoC, Regional Councils etc.
- Various crown research agencies and DoC have very useful information locked up from public access - NZERN wants to pass this on to the community groups directly.

A third very technical discussion is underway on what changes need to be made to Pipi to make it do all of the above.

The "Pipi 2003-05 Information Plan" and discussions are being organised by the Pipi Steering Committee on behalf of NZERN.

The cost is being covered by DoC via the TFBIS fund. - Thanks DoC!
