2003 YHA Young Conservationist Awards
Entry Information & Form

The 2003 YHA Young Conservationist Awards, a joint project between the Youth Hostel Association New Zealand (YHA NZ) and the Department of Conservation (DOC) is a perfect opportunity for teachers to use current student-centred projects in conservation to fulfil the key dimensions of environmental education.

This year YHA New Zealand and Department of Conservation (DOC) are looking for innovative projects that include a hands-on/action component related to some aspect of conservation.

If you know of, are involved in or are planning a project that might be eligible, let us know! Projects can be located anywhere - at school, on a marae, by a river, on the coast, in a local reserve, or in entrants' own backyards.

Categories
There are 4 award categories:

* Click on each icon to find out about each species*
Tui Award - Primary Individual Award

Wheke Award - Primary Group Award

Harakeke Award - Secondary Individual Award

Tuatara Award - Secondary Group Award

Each category is named after a native animal or plant with a significant relationship to conservation and New Zealand's biodiversity.

Entries
The YHA Young Conservationist Awards are open to any school, youth or marae-based group under the age of 18. It is very important that you (students) do the work including the entry outline brief. We understand that some adult input may be necessary but essentially we want to know what you are doing. If there is adult input it must be specified in the project brief. In the case of research projects, it is important to show how the research can be or has been applied to benefit the environment. Click here to read about some examples of previous entries. Entry forms for 2003 can be downloaded at the base of this page.

What we need from you?
Well, we are glad you asked! We receive lots of entries and to make it easier for our judges we request entrants to provide a clearly written outline of the project no longer than six (6) pages long, explaining:

 The aims of the project
 The people involved
 What was done
 What was achieved
How they see the project developing in the future.

The project outline can include relevant photos, illustrations and other supporting material e.g. video, however if students have a display board - please send through photographs only. YHA NZ and DOC will keep the original entry outline brief for our records. Only additional supporting material (e.g. video) will be returned to entrants.

We would like to be fair to all entrants, which means that if a project has won a YHA Young Conservationist Award Prize in the past, it will not be eligible for an award in this year's competition. However if previous winners have started any new projects we would love to see them!

Hint: The judges are especially interested in on-going projects that show a large degree of voluntary effort by young people, and a long-term commitment to the issue.

Timeline
Entries will close at 5pm on 19 September 2003. This will give you two terms to complete your entry. Winners will be announced on 10 October 2003 and it is hoped all presentation of prizes will be complete by the end of October.

What's in it for entrants?
All entrants under the age of 18 receive a certificate and a free one-year membership to YHA New Zealand. YHA and DOC believe it is important to congratulate and recognise everyone who is making an effort for the good of their environment. And we know that many YHA NZ and DOC staff would be interested in hearing about what is happening in your area.

Prize winners will receive:

Group Awards:
$1000 cash to support your ongoing conservation project (or a future project)

Individual Awards:

Senior

Eco-Trip for 2 to Australia*
(for winner & their parent/guardian)
Primary/Intermediate

Eco-Trip for 2 within New Zealand*
(for winner & their parent/guardian).
*See terms and conditions on entry form.

The Tree Council's Auckland Region Tree Services Guide and Directory 2003/2004 edition

(5th edition since 1993)

WHY YOU SHOULD ADVERTISE

Purpose of Directory
The purpose of the 36 page directory (A5) is to provide a guide and directory to tree services in the Auckland region, as well as educational information on the importance and value of trees, and urban trees in particular. The booklet aims to have something of interest for a variety of people and occasions, as well as providing a user friendly networking tool for the industry. 4 editions have been published since 1993, the last edition being 1999/2000.

4,000 copies of the new edition will be published by the end of May 2003. This edition will not only be updated, but will also have a new design and the editorial content will be revamped.

The directory is a good vehicle to let interested customers and members of the public know about your service. They will all have an interest in trees, and many will either now, or in the future, be wanting to know who they can turn to for a range of tree related tasks.

Your advertising enables the directory to be published. The booklet not only provides a friendly networking tool for the industry, it also supports the work of the Tree Council, and helps to stimulate interest in the wider value and importance of trees and thus helps to bolster the vitality of this sector generally. This can only be good for your business.

Directory Content
This updated edition will include:
· Tree Protection Guidelines, tree policies and contact details from all local authorities in the region
· Adverts and listings of commercial and professional services along with voluntary groups and professional organisations

Benefits to advertisers include:
· free copies to encourage interest / take-up
· wide distribution in `fertile' areas across the region
· long shelf life with circulation over 2 years
· supporting public interest and knowledge in the industry generally
· networking tool for the industry
Distribution:
· Tree Council members and their affiliated organisations/NGOs
· Local authorities
· Public libraries
· CABs
· Supportive trade, retail and professional outlets

Bush Telly
Wendy Barry has been nominated as a trustee for the Bush Telly Trust. Wendy is the education officer of WWF - World Wide Fund for Nature and is based in Wellington.

04/05/2003
Restoration Day
The Wellington Restoration day on Saturday was a great success. 120 attended from a wide range of restoration groups. There was also a good turn out from DoC, Regional Council etc.

The venue was the Otari Wilton's Bowling Club building at Otari Wilton's Bush. There were lots of interesting displays, speakers, a tour and great food.

Thanks especially to DoC and Wellington Regional Council for a lot work to make this annual event possible.

Thanks Otari Wilton's Bush Trust for hosting the event

More information about this event will no doubt be posted on the forums and as an article on the website.

04/05/2003
NZERN Branches
Efforts are underway to bring a lot new blood onto the Northern Branch committee. Because some of the existing people are snowed under with responsibilities (new babies, their own groups, work, etc) Julia White (Wellington Forest & Bird, Wellington Botanical Society) has taken on the job of finding new people. She is approaching groups to find out who they want on.

The idea is that the Wellington based committee will eventually be made up of a President, Secretary, Treasurer, committee members chosen by community groups from different geographic areas, an Iwi rep, Native Plant Nursery Industry rep and a school liason person.

Thanks heaps Julia for doing this!

You can contact Julia at Wellington (04) 938-5102 juliawhite@paradise.net.nz

04/05/2003
Fundraising
The Doc run TFBIS fund has agreed to help pay for the costs of developing some of the useful resources on the NZERN website. The Birdguide, PlanterGuide and native plant propagation modules will all benefit from this very generous grant of $15,000. There is still some paperwork to sign.

Thanks DoC!

04/05/2003
Restoration Directory
30 copies of a draft of the Wellington Restoration Directory were handed out at the Wellington Restoration Day. Thanks everyone who handed back revisions, new listings and especially found spelling mistakes.

Corrections need to be posted to NZERN, PO Box 9000, Christchurch or dropped off to phone Julia White in Wellington (04) 938-5102 juliawhite@paradise.net.nz

The deadline is May 31.

The 2003 edition will be mailed out in July - 400 copies to schools, libraries, community groups, councils, native plant nurseries etc.

Remember its a phone book that people will use for 12 months - so lets all help make it as complete as possible now. Various agencies have also been invited to supply 400 copies of A4 sized resource material that can be included by the printer when collating. Please post direct to the NZERN office - it needs to come dead flat.

06/05/2003
Pipi Update
A 2 year plan is now being prepared for the development of Pipi - the computer program that produces Kereru, drives the NZERN website and publishes the regional Restoration Directories.

A series of meetings, interviews and online forum are being organised across NZ to get the widest possible input from community groups, iwi, farmers, native plant nurseries and schools about their information needs.

- What information do you need to help you carry out your restoration project?
- Do you keep planting, pest control, plant, bird, stream health records?
- Do you need a place to host your website?
- Do you need maps?
- How could the NZERN website and password area be improved?
- Other needs - keeping nursery information - cultural uses of plants - farm shelterbelts - teaching resources.

A second series of workshops in the 4 main centres are to be held for agencies and national organisations who want to discuss sharing data with NZERN via Pipi.

- Pipi will be capable of automatically providing data for other websites - helping to keep them up to date. This will save the owners of these websites a lot of work & cost.
- Many community groups are putting information into Pipi with the intention of having this data passed on to DoC, Regional Councils etc.
- Various crown research agencies and DoC have very useful information for conservation locked up from public access - NZERN wants to pass this on to the community groups directly.

A third highly technical discussion is underway on what changes need to be made to Pipi to make it do all of the above.

The "Pipi 2003-05 Information Plan" and discussions are being organised by the Pipi Steering Committee on behalf of NZERN.

The cost is being covered by DoC via the TFBIS fund. - Thanks DoC!

More information next week about how to register for these events.
