from Murray Dawson of Canterbury...

Conference on Urban Biodiversity

22-24 October 2003 Greening the City: Bringing Biodiversity Back into the Urban Environment. Conference of the Royal NZ Institute of Horticulture (in association with the CCC, ECan, Landcare Research and PGG). Held at Chateau on the Park, Christchurch.

The important role of cities as a repository for biodiversity is increasingly recognised within New Zealand and overseas, along with the need to focus on sustainable development, triple bottom-line accounting, and the function of green environments in maintaining community health and cohesion. In New Zealand, recent reports by the Parliamentary Commission for the Environment and the Ministry of the Environment have drawn attention to these issues. The conference will be based on these and other themes, with an emphasis on practical outcomes.

The conference will be held in the Garden City of Christchurch, where there is much collective expertise on urban biodiversity. Complementing our local experts will be several world authorities on the Greening of Cities, Landscape Architecture, and Town Planning to act as keynote speakers.

These topics are very timely as the Christchurch City Council puts into place its Biodiversity Strategy, which will be unveiled at the conference.

Keynote speakers include:
*Dr Morgan Williams, Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Wellington, New Zealand
*Professor Chris Bains, one of the UK's leading environmental campaigners, and an award-winning author and broadcaster
*Mason Tan, Landscape Architect and Director of Mace Studio, Singapore

Who will attend?

*Local and Regional Councillors
*Town Planners
*Landscape and Building Architects
*Horticulturists
*Educationalists
*Researchers
*Conservation Groups
*Others interested in Urban Biodiversity

From Dick Veitch of Auckland...

ISSG Conference Book

The Proceedings of the International Conference on Eradication of Island Invasives, held at the University of Auckland in February 2001, is now available for you to purchase.

This 424 page book titled: “Turning the Tide: The Eradication of Invasive Species”, edited by Dick Veitch and Mick Clout, contains 52 papers from conference presentations and the abstracts from a further 21 of the presentations.

The papers presented to the conference focused on the subject of: “Eradication of invasive species from islands; methods used and the results achieved.” The term ‘eradicating’ included work to remove invasive species where complete eradication was some, or many, years away but the methods used were achieving positive results or providing a significant learning experience. The term ‘island’ included true islands, natural habitat islands, remnant and artificial habitat islands, or new invasions of natural ecosystems where eradication was deemed feasible. Preference was given to papers which provided detail of the techniques used or of the ecosystem response to the work. Significant learning experiences included methods which failed.

The full contents list of the book, and all abstracts as written prior to the conference, can be seen on our web site www.issg.org

This book can be purchased for NZ$55.00 (plus p&p) from Dick Veitch, 48 Manse Road, Papakura, New Zealand. E-mail dveitch@kiwilink.co.nz, phone/fax +64 (0)9 298 5775. Payment in New Zealand dollars must reach this address before 31 March 2003. Mastercard and Visa accepted. Your order must include a postal address. P&p costs per copy are: New Zealand $5.00, Australia NZ$14.00, USA NZ$29.00, UK NZ$32.00, and ask about other countries.

This book may also be purchased from IUCN Publications Services Unit, 219c Huntingdon Road, Cambridge CB3 0DL, United Kingdom, phone +44 1223 277894, fax +44 1223 277175, e-mail books@iucn.org. They should now have stocks. Call or see their web page http://www.iucn.org/bookstore for details.

Pipi Update
Recently added to Pipi:

On-line accounting system
Project management webtool
PlanterGuide editing area
A newsfeed tool
PlantGrow

Next to be done is the User Forum. This is a rewrite of an existing opensource software package and is expected to take 4 weeks (160 hours). When completed, forums will be attached to PlanterGuide, PlantGrow, BirdGuide etc for people to use. Anyone will be able to view but only people with passwords will be able to post to the forums.

02/03/2003
Field Days
NZERN recently received funding from the Biodiversity Advice Fund to organise or participate in a series of field days around NZ.

A major focus being to teach people how to use PlanterGuide as a tool for working out what to plant where.

The field days will be organised by the local NZERN branches. Other agencies will be very welcome to participate as well with what ever they want to do.

We are also on the look out for events organised by other groups that NZERN can come along to with a stall to provide this training.

02/03/2003
Membership Update
A lot more members have been signing up to the network lately. There are now 571 accounts set up. An increasing trend has been the number of individual/family landowners with a block of bush joining.

60 accounts are for funders or suppliers.

Affiliate members have been joining at the rate of 2-3 per day on average. This is a no cost option for members of groups/families which have an existing membership account with NZERN.

02/03/2003
NZERN Branches
The next National Council meeting has been called for Saturday May 24 at 4pm. It will be run as a phone conference. Each branch needs to take responsibility for the participation by the local committees.

High on the agenda are:
1. 2003-2005 development plan for Pipi.
2. 2003 National Training Conference in Wellington.

Please send other agenda items directly to Simon Johnson.
simonj-hrs@clear.net.nz

If you are from a local group or are an individual member, please contact the local branch if you have things you want done.
