Avon River Strategy - Questionnaire
The Christchurch City Council is consulting on a strategy for the Avon River. Please complete the questionnaire to say how you want the river and its environs to be managed in the future. see http://www.ccc.govt.nz/avonriver/index.asp The Avon River as we know it today is a dynamic thread flowing through our city. It supports a variety of flora and fauna, provides a unique attractive feature within our city, is the centre of a number of recreational pursuits, and also takes away stormwater from our citys streets. For these reasons the Avon river catchment which includes the water, the banks and beyond is under constant pressure from a number of sources. We can enhance the areas around the Avon River, have events on its banks and enjoy its riverbank environment but unless we think about the river as a life supporting system we could lose the very essence of what makes it special by allowing it to be come severely degraded. A careful balancing act between aesthetic, ecological and recreational needs must be planned if we are to sustain and improve the health and appearance of the Avon River corridor for future generations. STUDY AREA - While recognising that the Avon River is a dynamic system flowing from Avonhead to the estuary, the focus of this study is from the Antigua Boatsheds to Fitzgerald Avenue or to go directly to the questionnaire: http://www.ccc.govt.nz/avonriver/AvonRiverquestionnaire.pdf Contact Suzanne Weld Parks and Waterways Unit Ph 941 8490

The Wildlife Society's Restoration Working Group
Hello, NZERN: I am the newsletter editor for The Wildlife Society's Restoration Working Group, an organization formed within our parent society (TWS) to facilitate communication between members interested in ecological restoration. I think it would be fantastic if folks from your network submitted newsletter articles, book reviews, etc for publication in our online newsletter. Our membership is currently mostly within the U.S. so any new geographic viewpoints in restoration would be a great addition. Please check out our web site at http://www.tws-west.org/restoration for examples of previous newsletters. I look forward to communicating with members of your organization more in the future. Sincerely, Steve Windels Newsletter Editor Chair-elect, Restoration Working Group

More resources at http://www.bush.org.nz/resource/ 7. NZERN News 3/11/2002 BirdGuide The bird database is currently being checked for accuracy. It will then be uploaded to the website. It includes 350 birds found in NZ, both native and introduced including extinct since human occupation of NZ. BirdGuide will enable groups to create mutiple species lists. Eg: What would have been here Whats here now Proposed reintroductions The names given will be latin, common and Maori. The names will link to a basic fact sheet about each bird species with further links to other very useful ornithological websites like Birdlife International, BirdNet, plus reading material. Harry Boufal is keen to add other material over time including funstuff for kids. The whole setup has been future proofed to enable datasharing (eg bird sightings reporting) being passed on to DoC, Ornithological Society of NZ, Landcare Research etc as their systems are developed.... 3/11/2002 Kereru Kereru will be mailed each fortnight for the next wee while. This is because the silly season is approaching and a major effort is going on to get work done on the BirdGuide, PlanterGuide and Plant Propagation databases. This affects all editions of Kereru. Any material sent thru for inclusion will still go onto the website noticeboard etc.... 3/11/2002 NZERN Branches Mike Peters has been elected as NZERN Rep for Christchurch City. Ryan Young has been elected by the Central Branch Committee as Branch Secretary. Commercial Native Plant nurseries are currently choosing a rep as well for that branch (more info from Paul Michael at Fernfactor 03-344-0297). Nominations are called for Branch President and Treasurer. A meeting will be called for late November in Christchurch. Agenda items include: Suggestions for the Motukarara Open Day program Publishing the Canterbury Restoration Directory.... 3/11/2002 AGM Nominations are called for National President, Secretary, Treasurer, Editor and Returning Officer. The election will take place at the National AGM on Sunday 17th. Voting is by delegates from the 3 branches.... 3/11/2002 Pipi Update Site Manager has been upgraded. Site Manager is used to edit info about a restoration site/s by the owner from the password area. There are now 4 forms & matching web pages. Many fields have been renamed or laid out differently following suggestions from Denise Ford (Travis Wetland Trust). + Management + History + Restoration Directory + Location Travis Wetland is a good example of its use. http://www.bush.org.nz/site/50.html This will need further upgrading early next year for GIS components, weed reporting and EcoTrack (site monitoring)....
