334: from Ian Spellerberg of Canterbury... NEW ZEALAND'S TOP TEN MOST POPULAR PLANTS - WHAT ARE THEY? What do you think are the most popular New Zealand native plants? Would your selection include Icon plants (such as flax and cabbage tree) or do you have a special favourite that deserves greater recognition? Lets here your views. The Isaac Centre for Nature Conservation (based at Lincoln University) invites everyone to contribute their suggestions as to what they feel are the most popular New Zealand native plants. This is the first of an annual countrywide survey to seek personal selections for the top ten favourite New Zealand native plants. These favourites could include a selection of trees, shrubs or wildflowers. You are invited to select up to ten of your most favourite native plants and send your list to the address below. Please list your selection in order of preference and include either common names or scientific names. You may also like to comment on your personal selection and say why they are your favourites or why they should be in the top ten most popular native plants for New Zealand. There are some prizes to give away. After the closing date, the first three entries drawn from the nominations will be awarded prizes. Entries close on January 4th 2003. The results and the winners of the prize draw will be made known in the March issue of the New Zealand Gardener. NZERN News 13/10/2002 Website Upgrades last week include the ability to search the website using a search engine, the listing of publishers and their periodicals, and a detailed "Contents A-Z" of the website. Development of the website is currently 6 weeks behind schedule.... 13/10/2002 Pipi Update A steering committee responsible for the long term management of Pipi has been elected. Members include Denise Ford - an experienced Cobol programmer (Travis Wetland Trust), Dave Evans - hardware design expert (Native Habitats), Parker Jones - GIS manager (Miro), Mike Peters - Coldfusion & Access programmer (Addington Bush Society), Crile Doescher - GIS lecturer (Otamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Charitable Trust). The Pipi steering committee will be meeting 3-4 times per year and will report to the NZERN National Council. This has been done because of the rapid development- growing complexity of Pipi and the need to provide a "rock solid" reliable intranet for everyone involved in looking after our threatened biodiversity. The committee will be developing a long term plan for our computer system, be responsible for purchasing of equipment and software, security, backups and documentation, development and operations. Mike is development manager and Denise is operations manager, both responsible for much wider teams of volunteers helping with the technical side of Pipi. This will free up the existing NZERN management committee to focus more on developing the human network between farmers/residents participants, runanga, community groups and agencies. As well as get back to a very practical focus on "hands on" restoration. The first meeting is on Monday November 4th at 8pm.... 13/10/2002 Bush Telly Tim Park, QE2 Trust ecologist, has been nominated as a trustee for the Bush Telly Trust. Ryan Young is currently filming in the far north for future programs. An operational plan is currently being written for the trust which will next meet late November.... 13/10/2002 GIS Full scale mapping of restoration sites is now underway. Following successful training by the NZERN Training School, volunteers are now getting all the data provided by community groups/regional reps onto maps. The "shapefiles" now being mapped are: Location of native plant nurseries that ecosource Polygons outlining the exact boundaries of individual restoration sites or bits of them Bounding boxes containing the general locations of restoration projects Land requiring formal protection at the request of landowner/iwi/community group Weed infestations reported by community groups Weed-free buffer zones around restoration sites These maps will be displayed on the internet and will be available for downloading as high resolution pdf files. Many more mapping layers will be developed in future based on discussion and feedback from NZERN members.... 13/10/2002 GIS A big thank you to Bridget Quin & Parker Jones at Eagle Technology for providing a free update for ArcView 8. This is saving NZERN a lot in scarce funds. ArcView is software used to create maps and is state of the art. Its also used by NIWA, Landcare Research, DoC and many councils. Having the same software makes it easier to share information.... For more nzern news http://www.bush.org.nz/nzern/ 8. CONTACT NZERN's main on-line resource is at www.bush.org.nz.
