326.  From Colin Meurk of Canterbury...

We need bellbird sightings - and you can help!

We would be very grateful if you could send us, at Landcare Research, any
observations of bellbirds in north Canterbury between now and July 2003.
This will help us to understand the patterns of bird survival, dispersal and
breeding and thereby how better to sustainably manage their expansion across
Christchurch and the surrounding plains. Ideally we would like records of
birds, the number, their behaviour, location, habitat, date of observation,
colour bands observed on legs, and the sequence of colours on each leg. But
even just a positive sighting or hearing of a bellbird call, its location
and date will be useful.
You can enter information directly on the hotlink
http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/research/biodiversity/bellbird , or it can
be sent to: bellbird@landcareresearch.co.nz .

Many thanks

Fantastic Opportunity

Translocation of Mohua/yellowhead, Marlborough Sounds - Volunteers Required

I am looking for volunteer field assistants to help me with my Masters of
Conservation Science research over the summer. For my thesis I am studying a
translocation of mohua or yellowhead to Nukuwaiata, a predator free offshore
island in the Marlborough Sounds.

The work will involve intense monitoring of the birds. I require Volunteers
who have some birding experience, first-aid and are fit, as the island is
very steep. I am also looking for people who are level headed and able to
cope in an isolated situation.

I will be working on the island in two-week stints and need two field
assistants per trip. There will be approx 8 trips, so I need about 16
people. The trips will start at the beginning of November and will Continue
through to the end of Feb (Nov 5-19, Nov 19-Dec 3, Dec 3-20, Dec 31-Jan 14,
Jan 14-28, Jan 28-Feb 11, Feb 11-Feb 25, Feb 25-Mar 11, give or take a
couple of days). If you are able to come out for a fortnight or longer that
would be great.

If you are interested or know someone who would be please send me an
e-mail to davidk@paradise.net.nz

Cheers
Emily King
