The third annual urban habitat restoration day was held at the WEA Centre in Gloucester Street, Christchurch on Saturday 30 September. There were displays from projects, sample items from the NZERN library and computer database, talks, plus a shared lunch and a discussion on learning about restoration.

The Talks programme included:
·    Simon Johnson's news on Travis Wetland's fast progress this year, with new walkways, pond and ditch excavation, pest plant controls and native replantings;
·    Ken Mason's report of coastal forest re-creation on Otago's windswept island sites;
·    brief news on the Styx River (from John Knox) and an October two day urban biodiversity course at Lincoln (Colin Meurk – from whom papers will be available).
·    We also heard from Margaret Yorke, a school-teacher on a Royal Society Fellowship, based this year with Christchurch City Council Water Services, who described her work promoting student involvement in planning, design and creation of riparian native plant habitats in school grounds, transforming their landscapes in the process.

A similar day can be arranged for September 2001 to encourage exchange of experience between restoration projects – register your interest with: office@bush.org.nz or telephone Rhys on 03 343 6226. Note also the other annual opportunity for Canterbury restoration projects to meet, at DoC Motukarara native plant Nursery, next due in April.
