Database Project
By Cass Boyd (Christchurch)
The data that has been collected by various members of The Bush Society is scattered around many locations and to control and manage its growth and allow it to be productive it must be stored in a database. The purpose of a database is to provide secure storage for data and to enable it to be used easily for a variety of tasks. The present use that The Bush Society has for the data collected ranges from producing the addresses for the labels for The Bush Telegraph to retrieving the source location on a particular date of the seeds that were planted at a particular site. The database must be designed so that there is minimal room for human error in inputting the data and that the information is easily retrieved.

The philosophy of The Bush Society is that “many hands make light work” and with this in mind the database will eventually be used by many people. I am developing a database in Microsoft Access to meet this purpose and progressively through that development it will have to be tested by those who will use it and feedback given about its performance. The long vision sees the database eventually on the internet with its accessibility and security controlled by use of passwords. Thankfully the society isn’t a financial concern so there shouldn’t be any motive for hackers to infiltrate our system!

I hope we can work together on this database and in the spirit of The Bush Society make it thrive as the result of combined effort.
