The Department of Conservation
DOC is the lead crown agency responsible for conservation. The department has staff trained in land management who will advise you on how to identify, maintain and where necessary enhance conservation values. Contact is best made through your local conservancy
in the first instance.
Forest Heritage Fund
Provides a range of protection mechanisms including purchase where appropriate to protect indigenous forest.
Nga Whenua Rahui
Provides funding to help Maori owners identify and protect land with significant indigenous forest on it.
The QEII National Trust
An independent organisation set up to help landowners protect important landscape features on their land. Has covenants for both pakeha and maori landowners.
Forest and Bird
A leading conservation group with branches around the country, which have often helped to raise funds to secure nature conservation values on private land. The society is a valuable contact point in the community and works closely with land owners on a range of
projects.
NZ Native Forests Restoration Trust
A private voluntary organisation which aims to protect and fully restore native forests in New Zealand. It has purchased a number of significant properties on the open market and is also a strong campaigner for conservation values in the wider political arena.
NZ Landcare Trust
The Landcare Trust encourages land user groups to integrate native conservation with efficient and sustainable production; some already have, involving both environmental and recreational interests in their groups.
Regional Councils
Have taken over the functions previously carried out by catchment boards.
