CANTERBURY CONSERVATION WEEK EVENTS - OUR PLACES, OUR STORIES

Event: Rock Art rubbings- Canterbury Museum, Rolleston Avenue.
Templates of traditional Maori rock drawings will be available in Nga Taonga for visitors to make crayon rubbings. These templates are from various sites throughout New Zealand and an educator will be available to provide background information about the rock drawings.

Time: Boat leaves at 10.30 from "B" jetty, returning from Ötamahua/Quail at 2.30pm.
Event: The Pa, the Fort, and the Quarantine Station

Event: Rock Art rubbings - Canterbury Museum, Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch.

Event: Weka Pass Railway Inc. Experience the thrill of historic steam and diesel engines as you 'travel back through time' on this spectacular railway. Completed in the late 1880s it is now run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers.

Event: Christchurch's grand old cinemas. Join architect William Fulton on a nostalgic walk around some of the city's historic cinemas. Meet at the Odeon, 214 Tuam Street, then visit the Majestic in Manchester Street and some of the surviving theatres in Cathedral Square.

Event: Hands-on heritage at the Timeball
Students learn how to clean, classify and catalogue artefacts found on the site of the historic Timeball Station.
Cost: Free. Any members of the public who visit will be free to watch and enjoy the exercise.

They will be able to answer questions and give advice regarding walks, features and the purposes of buildings within the park. Information will also be available about the recent development of Christchurch's six Sister City Gardens within the park.
Venue: Halswell Quarry Park Visitor Centre, (Old Singlemens's accommodation).

Event: "While you're away"
Author Anna Rogers speaks about the New Zealand army nurses who served overseas in the First and Second World Wars. Her talk, laced with quotes and anecdotes, will be given in the Nurses' Memorial Chapel built to commemorate three Christchurch nurses who died when the troopship Marquette was torpedoed in October 1915. Anna's book "While you're away: New Zealand Nurses at War 1899-1948" will be published later this year.
