Pipi Development Plan July 2002

Author
Mike Peters

A major milestone was reached at the end of June 2002 with progress on the NZERN website. The objectives as voted on at the National Conference in February 2002 were reached but not fully completed.

1. "A professional look we can all be proud of"
2. "New navigation system"
3. "PlanterGuide"
4. "User access to add and update data"

Because the amount of work has been overwhelming (6 months or 720 hours of programming time and only one programmer with the skills/time to do the job) it was very very difficult to do this work in a smooth step by step way. It was the classic "chicken and egg" senario. Over the last 5 weeks, its become apparent that the website can now almost run itself (except for the bugs!!)

The last NZERN National Management Committee meeting was able to put a plan in place for the next 3 months with realistic deadlines.

A lot of time was also wasted over the last 14 months responding to "fake offers" from Central Government type officials and their consultants who promised much but in the end delivered very little. This proved to be very disruptive and put progress back on Pipi by many months waiting on these useless individuals to make good their promises - instead of charging on with the resources we have already. However, fantastic help came from the most unexpected quarters: - charitable trusts and funds, a Doc area office, considerable equipment donations from our members, jobs done at "mates rates". All done with a smile and the minimum of paperwork. In other words "the community". An important lesson for NZERN which needs to be taken up by the local branches and discussed at our next National Conference.
