A new network of conservation groups aims to make it easier to keep Wellington green.

The Friends of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Club are among about 50 local conservation groups that the Department of Conservation wants to involve in a network to share information and skills.

Community relations officer Annabel Riley says there's about 25 conservation groups active in Wellington city, ranging from the Friends of the Town Belt to the Breaker bay Residents association.

Simon Kennet of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Club says he expects the network will be a valuable source of tips.

"There's so much information that's good information that you can't find out by reading a book, like which species can you grow on the bleak faces of Makara Peak."

The Department of Conservation is hosting a workshop at Wellington Regional Council on Wednesday February 14 at 7.00 pm.
