Eyes Wide Open Author Michele Hider Prior Publication Christchurch Star Copyright Christchurch Star Trampers, walkers, botanist, and anyone with an interest in plants is being urged to keep an eye out for the more than 80 threatened plant species in Canterbury.
The Department of Conservation has recently produced a poster depicting a small selection of the plants which are considered at risk from extinction. The public can help by informing us if they come across one of these plants, says Canterbury's community relations officer Sarah Mankelow. "Information on locations plays an important role in the conservation of these species." Although gardeners are urged to grow the plants if bought from a reputable nursery, they should never collect specimens from the wild. "Collection of rare and endangered species is a serious threat to their survival."
