Hi Amber.

Gay Munro from Southland here. Good to have a forum like this to share info.

Regards the work I'm trying to do in covenants here in Southland, here's how I see the ranking :

1/ funding - good to have some money in the system at present with the Biodiversity Condition Fund, although sounds like that's been well oversubscribed.

2/ training (if so,what?) Currently the only people with expertise on ecological weeds are DoC and ES staff. There's a real need to have private contractors on the go and for that to happen there needs to be money in the system somewhere to make it viable for them.

3/ technical advice - comparatively available from the agencies of DoC and ES.

4/ encouragement/recognition - would be good to see our councils being more active in acknowledging these weeds are a problem. eg Darwin's barberry on the roadside on the Southern Scenic Route just out of Invercargill on both the ICC and SDC road sides, but no control work undertaken.

other (please specifiy?) Not good at coming up with origianl ideas !

You'll be pleased to hear there's been a couple more areas protected in Otatara and that your report for the ICC has been very useful.

Cheers for now .....Gay

Hi Richard

Thanks for your reply. Good technical advice seems to be what most people are after. This is good for me to know and I will try to emphasise it as often as I can during the development of the Weedbusters programme.

Take care Amber

Hi Amber

>>Can you please take a minute to rank from most important (1) to least (5) the following - would you like to have more: technical advice funding training (if so, what?) encouragement/recognition other (please specifiy?)

For Addington Bush I would place

1. Correct identification of weed species in the bits we are looking after.

1. Training on weed control methods for those weed species in those areas.

Thanks

Hi Amber

in response to >>Can you please take a minute to rank from most important (1) to least (5) the following - would you like to have more: technical advice funding training (if so, what?) encouragement/recognition other (please specifiy?)

Our priorities would be 1) advice/example/model regarding the establishemnt of a weed register and eradication plan. 2) advice on eradication priorities ie threat assessment 3) recommendations on eradication method per species 4) advice on weed identification

Hi all, as national co-ordinator for weeds awareness (for DOC, based in Canterbury) I'm excited by this new forum and the new weeds page and encourage you all to use it!

As an opener to this forum I would like to ask a few questions of you all - DOC are in the process of building up a (multi-agency) programme called Weedbusters - and this has the potential to provide support for community groups...but first we need to know what support is needed.

Can you please take a minute to rank from most important (1) to least (5) the following - would you like to have more: technical advice funding training (if so, what?) encouragement/recognition other (please specifiy?)

Thanks!
