Thanks for the species name - yes its Acaena novae-zelandiae that we are propagating.

Its worked well as a weed suppresent for some of our plantings - seems to pile up and create a great thick mass of stems (if thats the correct term) that acts as a mulch as well.

yes, it could be added to the list. there are many native Acaena spp in NZ and one awful aussie one. the commonest in eastern Canterbury is Acaena novae-zelandiae - a shiny bright green species. there are also others that are typical of riverbeds such as A. buchananii - a lovely purply blue form with red spiny heads. also A anserinifolia is a plant of semi-shaded woodland and slightly moister sites. i haven't thought about putting new spp on planterguide yet - still trying to perfect the current version. The Addington Bush Nursery is propagating bidibidi acena ?, which is native to the area (56.02 Low Plains). It dosn't show up in planterguide so we can't select it for our nursery propagation list held on line.
